A short guide to the Orion Nebula

The Orion Nebula — M42 — is the brightest stellar nursery visible from Earth, and one of the few deep-sky objects you can locate without a star chart. The middle «star» of Orion’s sword is in fact a vast cloud of glowing hydrogen 1,344 light-years away, illuminated by a tight cluster of newborn stars at its centre.

In binoculars, M42 appears as a fuzzy patch with two or three bright points. In a 6″ telescope, the nebula begins to show structure — the dark intrusion known as the Fish’s Mouth; the bright Trapezium cluster at the heart; the wispy curtain of the eastern wing.

It is best observed between November and February from the northern hemisphere. From the southern hemisphere, the constellation rides high overhead and the nebula is properly enormous.
